Lion Dance Kids

The Race of the 12 Zodiacs & The Lion Dance Story is both an important part of the Chinese Celebration of the Lunar New Year. This workshop introduces the concept of courage to kids. Narrating a young girls journey to explore the origins of Chinese New Year. We provide help kids identify their zodiac animal, allowing them to identify with the strengths of the animal to empower them to face fears. We introduce Lion Dancing props, instruments and costumes to the kids. So they can have an upfront experience with the costumes.

Songs of Uganda

This workshop from Joseph centres on his heritage from the Baganda tribe in Uganda. He begins by performing traditional songs in the Baganda language accompanied by the Bakisimba dance and Kidigida rhythms. Students accompany Joseph by singing and learning the rhythms. Instruments used include Engoma (drums), Endingidi (tube fiddle), Amadinda (xylophone) and Adungu (harp).

Middle Eastern Belly Dance and Rhythm with Belyssa

Belyssa presents traditional and contemporary costuming and embroideries from Egypt, Jordan and Morocco and instruments of the Middle East. She uses props like assaya, swords, baskets and sagat to demonstrate regional styles of Bellydance and music from Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Iran. Students participate by practicing different rhythms with clapping, footwork, arm movements and improvisation.

Mbira of Zimbabwe

The Mbira, sometimes called the ‘thumb piano’ is an African instrument. It has been played by the Shona people of Zimbabwe for over a thousand years! George Joe will introduce its origins and history before playing the Mbira and singing some traditional tunes in the Shona language which students will accompany with percussion and singing.

Chung Wah Dance

Formed with the aim of promoting and preserving Chinese culture, the Chung Wah Association’s dance troupe are enthusiastic about sharing their heritage with students. Their program includes a performance of classical and contemporary Chinese dances using fans, umbrellas and handkerchiefs. Students participate by learning Chinese dance techniques and routines.

Kung Fu with Sifu Siu

Join Sifu Gawain Siu as he presents the cultural significance and history of Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Chinese Lion Dance. Becoming a Kung Fu instructor at just 14 years old, Sifu now has more than 50 years of experience in Martial Arts and will deliver an active workshop promoting respect and harmony. This program is also available to be delivered virtually.

Indonesian Dance

This vibrant program introduces contemporary and traditional Indonesian dances from diverse regions like Bali, Java or Sumatra. Astit leads a group of experienced Indonesian dancers and artists who use Indonesian language, traditional and modern music and colourful outfits to teach students the significance of music and dance in Indonesian life.

Music of Southern Italy

In this interactive workshop, students will discover the rhythms and sounds of the traditional music styles of southern Italy. The castanettes, the diatonic accordion, the tamburello, the putipu and the ciaramella are some of the instruments that bring energy and melody to this program! Then, with the infectious live music backing them, students will practice the lively folk dance the Tarantella.

Kinder Dreamtime with Larry Brandy

Larry Brandy is an Aboriginal storyteller with thirty years of experience. In this program tailored to younger students he introduces his Wiradjuri culture with a focus on the significance of family, the environment and everyday life. Masks and artefacts are shown to the children to explain how Aboriginal people hunted in traditional times. Students learn a dance with clapsticks and boomerangs and dance in a small Corroboree.

Indigenous Storytelling through Art

Through this practical workshop, the presenter will invite the students to learn Indigenous art symbols for man, woman, child, the land and numerous animals. The presenter creates a story using the symbols, and explains how to interpret it to the students. After copying and practicing drawing the symbols, the students will get to create and draw their own story (with the presenter’s assistance) using the symbols and techniques they have learned. Finally, students are invited to present their stories to the rest of the group.
