‘La musique des années folles en France’ refers to the music of the post-war years of the roaring 20s which swept across the world. Multi-instrumentalists Peter and Marie Rappolt have been playing live music together since 1969 for this program they are joined by French cabaret singer Corrine Andrew to form ‘Viva the Trio’. The trio play music from legends like Edith Piaf, Django Reinhardt, Sidney Bechet and Josephine Baker and contextualize the music by introducing the lyrics, instruments and cultural context in French and English according to the student’s level.
Pauline Maudy shares stories of her Parisienne childhood in an interactive vocal session with songs that explore intercultural understanding. Depending on the age group Pauline will teach students a popular children’s song or a catchy chorus from the Yé-Yé era of the 1960s which they’ll sing accompanied by the band. Students will hear and speak French throughout the workshop and end the session learning to waltz!
Students will be immersed in stories of Italian immigrants arriving in Australia, and the challenges that they face upon entering a new country. The presenter leads discussions of Italian culture, language, food and a folk dance workshop.
Born in France to French and Sephardic-Moroccan parents Pauline Maudy teaches Jewish Sephardic songs with influences from Turkey, Greece and the Balkans reflecting the widespread geography of the diaspora. John, a Flamenco guitarist, will accompany the songs and teach ‘palmas’, the clapping that is a common accompaniment to Flamenco music. This program can be tailored to Spanish language students.
Belyssa presents traditional and contemporary costuming and embroideries from Egypt, Jordan and Morocco and instruments of the Middle East. She uses props like assaya, swords, baskets and sagat to demonstrate regional styles of Bellydance and music from Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Iran. Students participate by practicing different rhythms with clapping, footwork, arm movements and improvisation.
The Joys of Women Choir sings a vibrant blend of traditional and contemporary Italian folk songs with a passion and enthusiasm that is infectious. A vibrant Group of women, La Gioie Delle Donne present traditional folk songs sung from their hearts with passion and enthusiasm. The aim of this remarkable showcase of mothers, wives and sisters is to retain and promote the Italian heritage, culture, arts and traditions through music and song.
Experienced teachers and performers of renowned Flamenco company ‘Alma Flamenca’ present this vibrant and interactive performance including all the elements of Flamenco – dance, guitar, singing and ‘Jaleo’! Students will discover the historical and cultural meaning of Flamenco, a highly intricate and expressive Andalusian art form which portrays both the depths and elation of human emotion. The group participates through upper body work, footwork, percussion and ‘palmas’ (clapping). Spanish language level can be adjusted according to student’s level.
Explore the unique and vibrant culture of Naples in Italy! Napoli native Mira takes students through her childhood to learn about this ancient city. Students will sing along to Neapolitan folk songs and practice traditional folk dances. The Italian language level can be adjusted to the ability of the students.
This musical and theatrical performance takes students on a cross-continental journey to learn about the origins of Roma culture. Using theatre, storytelling, puppetry and interactive workshops students will learn about the travels of the Roma people from India, across the Middle East and all the way to Spain! Students will recognise how the Roma influenced the music, dance, dress and language of these regions along the way.
