Australia Day Concert 2012: What’s in your Suitcase?

Australia Day concert 2012

What’s in your suitcase?

January 26,2012 – 7pm- Sydney Myer Music Bowl

Since 2004 I have been staging the Australia Day Concerts in Melbourne. Each year a different theme is chosen to celebrate the rich cultural heritage that makes up our wonderful nation. Past themes have included: Stories of Migration, Bunjil the Eaglehawk, The Way of the Bagpipe, Just Me ’n My Guitar, Moon Cow (based on Oxen), Drum on Drum Oz, The Big Bang (Creation Stories) and last year we brought to you “Blow Your Horn for Australia Day”, through which a narrative explored the German link to our unofficial National Anthem Waltzing Matilda.

In 2012, the concert is titled “What’s In Your Suitcase?”, and includes the InterACT Arts Project. InterACT connects professional artists from different cultural backgrounds with community groups to develop a multi arts production which promotes diversity to main-stream audiences. The concept of the suitcase was borne out of workshops with many residents in different parts of Melbourne. In these workshops we unpacked the notion of the “suitcase” where we explored culture, identity, memories and stories that make up Australia today.

A suitcase conjures up many things in people’s minds. As the son of Greek immigrants how often did I hear my parents exclaim the overly used cliché “We came here with Just a Suitcase In One Hand” and a relatively empty one at that. I am sure we all connect some way or another with a suitcase.

As I explore these ongoing themes it never ceases to amaze me as humans just how much more we have in common than difference.

Australia Day is a day to celebrate the past and present but more importantly it is a day to celebrate all things in a fun and exciting
new way. Tonight we have many surprises. We invite you to all join in during the sing-a-long to many of Australia’s favourite songs,
and if you don’t know the words then just sit back and watch as the suitcase begins to tell you the stories of the songs you will hear during the contemporary medley.

Happy Australia Day!

What’s In Your Suitcase?

Australia Day Concert – 26 January 2012

AUSTRALIA DAY CONCERT
26 January 2012 (7:00 pm) – Sidney Myer Music Bowl

“WHAT’S IN YOUR SUITCASE?”

“A suitcase made in China, a suitcase within a suitcase,
a suitcase full of joy, a suitcase FOB (Fresh off the Boat),
a suitcase all the way from Equatoria the state of Sudan filled with Shakespearean books, a suitcase smuggled through customs with a goat in it – All true stories about what makes up Australia today. What’s in your suitcase?”

2012 AUSTRALIA DAY CONCERT ONCE AGAIN PROMISES TO BE AN EXTRAVAGANZA.

Matilda with "the Blue Woman" from the "Blow your Horn" 2011 Australia Day Concert

This summer will mark the 9th official Australia Day concert for Australia Day on January 26, 7 pm by Peter Mousaferiadis. A new feature to this year’s concert is the location at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The show themed “What’s In Your Suitcase?” brings over 500 performers together exploring the metaphoric element of the suitcase.

Shadow puppeteers rehearsal for the 2012 concert

All elements of the creative landscape will be brought together for a grand display of music and performances. These include a drum and percussion spectacular led by Sergei Golovko, Director of the Australian Percussion Academy. Jonathon Welch, also known as the CHOIR Man and Adam Przewlocki will conduct a mass choir of 250 people.

Magicians, puppeteers, jugglers and community groups will also take stage in this spectacular concert. A massive 60 square metre suitcase designed by Gary Friedman will double up as a shadow screen to reinforce the themes and songs of the concert. The audience will be encouraged to sing along with the choir to favourite Australian songs which will culminate in the traditional Australia day fireworks.

Creative Director Peter Mousaferiadis developed the Australia Day concerts concept to be an event celebrating all things Australian. Past concert themes have included Creation Stories of the World, Bovines, Bunjil the Eaglehawk, Drums, Guitars, Horns, The Way of the Bagpipe and Stories of Migration. This year’s theme of the suitcase symbolizes both the journeys that people undertake and the ‘baggage’ that we carry with us from experiences and relationships.

“I feel proud to be Australian! It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to bring diverse communities together through this spectacular performance and share their stories to keep their heritage alive!”- Peter Mousaferiadis

This year’s Australia Day Concert is funded by VicHealth’s “Arts About Us” Program which aims to reduce ethnic and race based discrimination through the arts.

This Concert is FREE for all audiences to enjoy. Be sure to secure your spot at The Sidney Myer Music Bowl by arriving early for what promises to be a dazzling extravaganza.

June 2012: Cyber Wonder World and Cyber Sense

Programs to educate children on ettiquette and safety on the internet

Cyber Wonder World (Primary)

Primary students can be extremely tech savvy, but not always aware of the risks the Internet can pose. This fun play introduces primary students to the concept of cyber awareness, teaching them how to protect their computer and, most importantly, their privacy!

Cyber Sense (Secondary)

Older students may have learnt about cyber safety, but don’t necessarily heed the advice! This play examines the way students can use mobile phones, the Internet and social networking sites, and the impact their decisions and behavior can have on their own lives, and others.

Through our series of Wellbeing performances, Cultural Infusion aims to engage students in a dialogue about some of the challenges they might face at home and at school. The lively in-school performances engage and entertain students, whilst teaching them how to make better choices and developing their condence and coping skills. The presenters lead a short follow-up discussion and teachers are provided with activities to complete in-class.

Program fee: $5 + gst per student, minimum 150 students
Duration: 50 mins
